Whether you love it or hate it, there’s no denying lacrosse is a growing sport. You see the sticks and gear everywhere; they’re even in the big sports stores like Modells and Sports Authority. The sport is also growing in popularity at the collegiate level. There are more men’s and women’s teams, and the tournaments are getting bigger and better.
Maybe it’s because the sport is so accessible. It doesn’t require the massive amount of raw athletic ability that football or hockey does. All you need is good vision, quick reflexes and a lot of tenacity. And the equipment is inexpensive, compared to what you’d pay for a new jersey or pair of gloves. And, as you’ll see in this week’s news segment, there’s even a lacrosse-specific gym that can help players improve their stick skills.
Also in the news this week, a new Mexican restaurant opens in downtown La Crosse, and a Five Below store is opening next Friday in part of the former Shopko location across from Valley View Mall. Plus, a local nonprofit is buying the Mama K’s Pizza frozen pizza business and building.
And in a court case that could have huge ramifications for the region, the jury in the murder trial of Lori Phillips heard more details from the victim’s autopsy Wednesday.
And the city council continues to weigh options for the library’s budget, as it faces a 2024 deadline. Plus, the speed limit on a busy part of County B is going down.
