The game of lacrosse is played with a stick and a ball. The goal is to advance the ball down the field and shoot it into the opposing team’s goal. Players cannot touch the ball with their hands during play, but can carry it or pass it to teammates. A crease surrounds each goal to mark the area where a team may not enter. Each team has ten players: three attackmen, three midfielders, three defensemen and a goalie. The attackers spend most of their time in the offensive half of the field while the defenders are responsible for preventing opponents from scoring.
The head of a lacrosse stick, also known as a crosse, is roughly triangular and strung with loose netting that allows the ball to be carried (also called “cradling”), passed, caught, or shot. The stick is also used to check opponents when they are advancing toward the ball or within five yards of it, or when an opponent shoves another player from behind. The game is played on a field 110 yards long and 60 yards wide with goals at either end that are six feet by six feet.
In addition to the rules of the sport, there are several additional governing bodies that govern different aspects of the game. These include the National Collegiate Athletic Association, US Lacrosse, Canadian Interuniversity Sport and the Federation of School Athletics. There are also various local leagues that oversee the sport at the community level.
