Lacrosse Definition – Learn the Game

Lacrosse, also known as “rolo” is a sport that was created back in the 17th century from a game played in Europe called “setter.” As lacrosse started to develop in Europe players began using two handles (called “staves”) and this game was soon known as lacrosse. In America when the American colonies settled at what later became New York, there was none of the existing rules or terminology for lacrosse so the colonists formed their own league and called it “LIA.” This shortened form of “London Lace,” but later changed to” Yorkers.” The first official tournament of lacrosse in the US was the “First American lacrosse championship” which was held in New York City in 1875.

For those people who are not familiar with lacrosse there are some basic things that you should know. Lacrosse is played on a hard lacrosse field where a ball is tossed with a stick or with a hand. The object of the game is to hit the ball into the opponent’s goal using any method you can think of or have ever seen in the game of lacrosse. If a team hits the other team they call that team “menace” and if they don’t, they call them “girls”. When playing against another team you are trying to defeat them by being the women.

These basic lacrosse terms may be foreign to you but don’t let that get you down. Lacrosse is a very fun sport to play, it’s fast-paced, and most important it is a friendly game. You’ll meet new friends, make new friends, and have a lot of fun with it!
