The sport of lacrosse is a fast-paced, skillful and incredibly fun game. In fact, it’s the fastest growing participant sport in America. So it’s no surprise that movies about the game have started to make their way onto the big screen. Although most of the movies on this list don’t focus solely on lacrosse, they all provide a great insight into the sport and its culture. Some of these films also have a strong emotional impact and are perfect for a weekend in front of the TV.

1. Crooked Arrows

A true underdog story, this movie follows a beaten down high school team of Native Americans as they try to defeat the boorish prep teams that dominate their league. Superman Returns star Brandon Routh plays mixed-blood Joe Logan, who agrees to coach the team on condition that tribal leaders allow him to build a casino on reservation land. Despite his lack of experience, Logan manages to lead the underdog squad to a surprising championship victory. In the process, he learns to respect the traditional cultural heritage of his ancestors.

2. Toe to Toe

A heartwarming movie about friendship between two high school girls, this film centers on Jesse, a wealthy white girl from a DC suburb and Tosha, a new African-American student at her prep school. The two students struggle to relate to each other, but they find common ground on the lacrosse field. Through their friendship, they learn to understand each other and overcome their differences.

3. Spirit Game: Pride of a Nation

This documentary follows the Iroquois Nationals men’s lacrosse team as they compete in the World Championships, and is one of the most important films about the sport. The film explores the Iroquois culture, history and traditions through their love of lacrosse. It’s an uplifting and inspirational movie that demonstrates the power of the sport.

4. Into the Sun

Taking place in a small Arctic town with one of the highest suicide rates in North America, this film follows the lives of several young Inuit players as they are introduced to lacrosse. The sport transforms their lives, helping them to overcome the trauma and distrust they suffered from residential schools. Into the Sun is an empowering and moving film that deserves to be seen by more people.

5. Cady Heron

A classic teen film, this movie stars a talented high school player who finds herself torn between the expectations of her military dad and her burgeoning relationship with Aaron Samuels, a fellow student. The drama is a bit overwrought at times, but the story remains engaging and entertaining.
