Lacrosse Pensacola is the official home of the historic Florida National Lacrosse Team. Since 1970 this all-star team has been bringing lacrosse to the area. Lacrosse is a sport that combines the art of “judging” with a physicality and style that is unique and difficult to describe. This has made it a premier sport in the area.
The history of the game can be traced back to the early Dutch settlers who played using a stick. These players were known as “pigeoners”. These pioneers would judge each other on the point of their sticks! It was only a matter of time before these pike leagues began to shape into organized teams. Initially, these teams practiced in local fields but when the weather got warm they moved to bigger fields that were near large springs.
The spring season was extremely hot and this caused many of the lacrosse players to get burned, especially on their heads. The summer was even hotter and the players were known to get burned even more. In an effort to prevent this from happening the organizers started using tarps to keep the players off of the ground. This was a great solution but the problem was that the tarps were so heavy that they could not be taken off of the field easily. This was a problem that did not go away as the winter season came to a close.
In the late spring the ground started to freeze. Again, in an attempt to prevent injuries from occurring players had to be dragged onto the frozen field to prevent their ankles from freezing. As the season went along more protective gear was made available. Wearing these protective pads proved to be invaluable as they helped to reduce the number of injuries that occurred on the lacrosse field. By the end of the year the field was usable once again.
The Lacrosse Pensacola team has since then gone onto establish several competitive teams all throughout the United States. Every year the team works hard to ensure that the quality of play is always at its highest level. Every single game that the team wins helps to build up and strengthen the team. The amount of commitment and hard work that the players put forth on the field cannot be questioned. They work extremely hard and never allow themselves to surrender.
