Foul: This is the first whistle that blows to alert the players of an infraction. The other team gets three seconds to get the ball into play on the field before the whistle blows to stop playing. When the ball is in play, the officials may then place their hands on either the ball or the net to count a foul. The officials can only call the foul, once the ball has been put into play on the field.

Block: A block is a foul that is called when a defender tries to block a ball that is already in play. The object of the block is to prevent a scoring opportunity.
