Lacrosse Visor

lacrosse visor

A lacrosse visor is a small insert that attaches to the face mask of a goalie helmet in an effort to reduce impact to the brain from shots that hit a goalie on the forehead. It was invented by a lacrosse coach after his all conference first team goalie got concussed from multiple hits to the forehead.

The visor is available from many lacrosse equipment manufacturers including Cascade, Warrior and Brine. The visor can be attached to any lacrosse helmet by removing the center screw and then aligning it for the best fit. It can be wiped clean and it is designed to not fog. Some goalies prefer the visor to the Lexi Shield which is similar but attaches to the visor part of the helmet and tries to reduce impacts by deflecting the ball away from the head.

NFHS rules state that a goalie can wear a visor but not tinted eye glasses. If a goalie wears both a visor and tinted glasses they must have a doctors note to be allowed to play.

Several years ago I reviewed a product from Australia called the S.H.O.C visor which is made to fit all lacrosse helmets. The visor can be cut to custom size and comes with a reflective iridium insert. It is easy to put in and out of the helmet with a quick clip and it does not require a helmet modification like other brands of visors. The visor also wipes clean from water, sweat, marker and even sunscreen.
